5/11/2023 0 Comments Book live and let dieIt uses a lot of elements from the novel of the same name from Ian Fleming but I think they improved it with the new elements (Yes this is actually a rare “The movie is better than the book” case for me). His investigation will lead him to a bigger threat. The scene were the agent died is quite remarkable and in a way very humorous (I am a bit ashamed to use the word humorous here). These individual cases seem linked to each other. The story starts when he is send on an investigation as one British agent died in New York, New Orleans and the (fictional) Island San Monique. Roger Moore is a more ironic and humorous James Bond and this was intentional as the producer wanted not a second Sean Connery but also not to alienate the fans. It was a mayor topic who was the better James Bond: Moore or Connery (Daniel Craig reached this status too but this is another topic or review). Both improved a lot and gave the definite version of James Bond for many fans. Like in Sean Connery's debut he is not as refined as he will become later on. But taken too far, it provides fuel for false narratives that can solidify into conspiracy theories that mislead and confuse. There are important questions to consider. When we do not have them, we sometimes indulge in responsible speculation that can serve the useful function of framing possibilities. And even among our international team – journalists who have covered Russia and the nefarious methods of warfare worldwide for decades – there was no agreement.Except on one thing: “We absolutely don’t know, and we probably never will know,” says Peter Ford, the head of our international department. That, of course, doesn’t sit very well today, when everything can be seemingly known with the flick of a thumb. Nonsense, Ukrainians and Americans respond. So, what really happened? Was it the Ukrainians, worried that their spring counteroffensive might falter, or simply eager to take out the leader laying siege to their country?Or was it the Kremlin itself? Was it a so-called false flag operation – in which Russian air defenses destroyed the threat – aimed at stirring Russians to greater anger and enthusiasm for the war, or to generate support for a bid to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy? That was the question we were asking ourselves at the Monitor this morning. Ukraine intended to kill President Vladimir Putin with American help, Russian authorities say. Through the grainy eye of a surveillance camera, a drone descends toward the heart of the Kremlin and explodes. The video is spectacular, and the event was surely intended to be so. 5/11/2023 0 Comments A true home by kallie georgeGraced with the black-and-white pencil drawings of American illustrator Stephanie Graegin, Heartwood Hotel's first book, A True Home, has surely found a place for itself in youngCanLit by captivating and gladdening our own hearts. By doing this, Kallie George makes A True Home a suitable read-aloud for younger children who will easily be able to imagine the Hotel with its miscellaneous accommodations (including the root floors with hibernation suites, trunk floors, branch floors, twig floors and honeymoon and penthouse suites) and star-gazing balcony and ballroom. But even the wolves, though frightening to many of the residents at the Heartwood Hotel, have an inane quality about them, squabbling about their achievements and the existence of the Heartwood Hotel. That majestic tree's hotel is built upon a solid foundation of respect for all creatures and the natural world of interrelationships, though as in the human world some need to be avoided if one is to survive. How do I convey to readers the infinite sweetness and gentility of A True Home? From the warm-hearted atmosphere and compassionate mission of the Heartwood Hotel and its staff to the plot of finding home, amidst common foibles and uncommon dangers, Kallie George's text is rich in friendship, courtesy, diversity and affection. Ha! –would a madman have been so wise as this? And then, when my head was well in the room, I undid the lantern cautiously –oh, so cautiously –cautiously (for the hinges creaked) –I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in! I moved it slowly –very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man's sleep. And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it –oh so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed, so that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded –with what caution –with what foresight –with what dissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Aiden king royal eliteWhat King doesn’t realize is that sinking his teeth in his Ice Princess will only leave him hungry for more. Unfortunately for both of them, she is about to be devoured by a man with a very dark appetite. He is best known for his work with Studiopolis. Without even being aware of her delectability Elsa has been an item on Aiden King’s menu from the start. Matthew Christopher Miller (born June 29, 1982), better known as Matthew Mercer, is an American voice actor. She’s on the near side of becoming a sandwich, ultimately waiting to be put together to fit someone’s tastes. I read this twice, read the prequel Cruel King from the Noble Savages anthology, and ran out of time to remain soaking in this Royal Elite world. Some good, some bad, but this book had all the complexity of fine wine, and I kept going back to study it. I have read three books of this genre in the last week for review. If you are riding the wave of Bully or Dark High School Romance, you will enjoy the hell out of this book.ĭeviant King has become somewhat of an obsession of mine. Rina Kent studied my reading preferences and was like, ‘Well, Ali will be all over this’ and created Aiden King. OMG! Sometimes I think authors are just at home in their writing caves penning books for me. This book rolled through my email as a Cover Reveal Blog Tour and I was all over it like it was cake. I received this novel from Enticing Journey Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Released by jordan marieAnd Amélie Wen Zhao, an Asian author, pulled her young-adult fantasy novel Blood Heir in early 2019 over its depiction of slavery. Last year, young-adult author Kosoko Jackson, who is Black and gay, pulled A Place for Wolves over its depiction of the Muslim community. In June, white author Alexandra Duncan pulled Ember Days, which would have depicted South Carolina’s Gullah Geechee community. Green is far from the first author to pull a novel over criticism about representation. It shows how publishing continues to struggle as it seeks to support more inclusive books. Her novel’s plot and main characters drew heavily from indigenous cultures of Hawaii in depictions that critics say Green flubbed in harmful ways.ĭancing With Fire’s demise is the latest stumble in a publishing industry that until recently has had limited space for non-white creators and editors. Living as we now do in the age of Kindle makes this excuse, it seems to me, rather harder to justify than might otherwise be the case. But we were told that Blackout and All Clear aren't two novels, but one novel chainsawed down the middle to accommodate the exigencies of commercial publishing. Some grumbled that giving the "best novel" prize to two books wasn't fair. The joint winners were Connie Willis's Blackout and Connie Willis's All Clear – the two halves of a lengthy narrative about time-travelling historians from 2060 in London during the second world war. T his year Connie Willis shared SF's blue riband prize, the Hugo, with herself. I owe a lot to this action-packed series by Laini Taylor. So it was that my piece de resistance turned out to be The Fairies of Dreamdark: Blackbringer (now published merely as Dreamdark: Blackbringer). The Ruby Key by Holly Lisle or Changeling by Delia Sherman? Yes, those he’d take. As a test I tried him out on What-the-Dickens by Gregory Maguire. Once Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black made it okay for boys to be into fairies the gender roles dissolved just a little. Without hesitation I virtually dragged the kid over to the middle grade reader section, then got some clarification. He knew to come up to the reference desk to ask his question, and he wasn’t shy about it either.
